![]() My only summary with GoodNotes' approach is that it is a custom implementation that bypasses the file app. In particular, nested folders should make a big difference to how people organize a large number of notebooks. The more robust document management and organizational tools in GoodNotes 5 are good additions. ![]() Another way to move items is with drag and drop, which works with multiple items on the iPhone and iPad. Items can also be individually or batch-exported, duplicated, moved, or sent to the Recycle Bin after tapping the checkbox icon at the top right of the screen. Everything in this view can also be marked as a favorite, which is a subset of items that appear when you open the Favorites tab at the bottom of the Docs view. Items in the document view can be displayed as thumbnails or a list and can be sorted alphabetically or by modification date. The feature is a fantastic shortcut that addresses the more complex folder structures users can now create. Instead of opening an existing notebook, which opens to the last page you looked at and may not be the page you want to edit, Quick Note lets you write something down immediately and move it to a notebook or other folder later. The Quick Notes features new to GoodNotes 5 and an excellent example of the added flexibility that the update offers. Quick notes, which are notes that live outside a notebook at any level in the folder hierarchy you are looking at, can also be created by double-clicking the "New" button. From here you can press the "New" button to create a folder or notebook, open an image from the iCloud Photo Library, take a picture with the device's camera, import a file from the Files app, or take a quick note. & # 39 Documents & # 39 is root level view for all folders, notebooks and notes. Now, however, GoodNotes 5 supports endless levels of nested folders, which should be a well-liked addition for anyone with many notebooks or individual pages of notes. In earlier versions of the app, Notebooks could be classified into categories, which served as a single flat folder structure. Like many notebooks, GoodNotes is organized around concepts of notebooks containing pages of notes. The area that has seen the most improvement over previous versions of GoodNotes is how laptops are managed and organized. The result is a more flexible, powerful app that plays to its existing strengths – which current users will appreciate – but should also appeal to a wider audience than ever before. The update maintains the simplicity of the app's design, but does a better job that surpasses existing functionality and expands other features. With version 5, the GoodNotes team has taken my favorite iOS note course app and refined every aspect of the experience. The switch from the indirect process of typing into a text editor to work directly on the iPad with Apple pencil provides a different perspective that helps me refine ideas in a way that doesn't write. It's in situations like these when I take my iPad Pro and open GoodNotes. The same goes for planning something new, whether it's the next big article or organizing my mind on another project. Lowering, changing tools and contexts, and working in different environments all help bring order to different thoughts. It is not as important to move fast when it comes time to refine these ideas into something coherent. When I am in the track, nothing in the text editor on my Mac or iPad Pro turns up to quickly capture thoughts and ideas so they are not forgotten. The obvious advantage of a keyboard is speed. ![]()
